U-Boot
MPL AG actively participates in the development of the Universal Bootloader (U-Boot), the successor of the former PPCBoot. Although the current version number is rather low, the inheritance of the PPCBoot project ensures a mature product.
We make tested binaries available for our PPC based products only, though. The documentation covering the installation of those binaries on the MIP405 is located in the MIP405 Documentation Area of this home page.

Linux Kernel for the MIP405
MPL AG maintains a patch against the LinuxPPC Kernel that contains all MIP405 specific changes and drivers. Please follow the procedure given below to be able to compile the kernel on your own:
- A working PowerPC (cross-)compiler is needed. The recommended version is 2.95.3. For the MIP405, the compiler should not use floating point instructions (but they are not used in the kernel, anyway). The C-library (glibc) is not used for the kernel, too.
- The appropriate kernel version from www.penguinppc.org. Instructions for to download the kernel are available here!. You will need BitKeeper from BitMover Inc. to download the proper kernel version.
- The kernel patch from below. This patch includes a default configuration (arch/ppc/configs/mip405_defconfig) which should be copied to .config in the linux directory. This configuration can be changed using the standard "make ???config" commands.
- To start the kernel build process, use the "make dep uImage modules" command. To be able to create a bootable kernel image, you also need the "mkimage" tool from the PPCBoot or the U-Boot package.
- After the build process finished successfully, install the kernel modules using "make modules_install" and copy the kernel image under "arch/ppc/boot/images/" to the appropriate location.

Mini Linux
The Mini Linux boot images below contain a minimal linux distribution that requires no additional hardware to run. The Mini Linux Distribution is documented in the "Mini Linux Ramdisk" Technote, available from the MIP405 Documentation Area of this home page.
